Inspiration behind this painting:-After working in a charity shop (pay back after my own brush with cancer) I now realise the quality of donations. Since that time, I often pop in to see what I can find. One day I found a beautiful silky, red dress, not my size but too good to leave behind. It intrigues me how historically artists have captured sumptuous fabrics with paint. I've spent many an hour in the Portrait Gallery in London pondering exactly that. How did they made the fabric look so realistic? The "Lady in Red" was a challenge. Could I capture the fabric as it was before me? She gazes wistfully out of the window. Is she excitedly waiting to go out or jilted, nursing a broken heart? Where is her beau? What's the story? I'll leave it to you to decide...
