About Lorraine Field | Oil Painter & Cancer Survivor

Lorraine Field Artist

Hi, I’m Lorraine

I’m an oil painter, a cancer survivor and someone who gets far too excited by a beautiful sunrise.

Painting has been my companion for most of my life.

When I was nine, my family moved house and I left behind the friends and places I knew. Art became somewhere I could go when I felt alone. Just me, a pencil and a piece of paper, with the freedom to imagine something beyond the life immediately in front of me.

Life filled up, as it does.

Family. Relationships. Heartbreak. Work. Starting again.

Art never completely left me, but for a long time it had to sit patiently in the background.

Then cancer changed the way I saw time.

The ordinary moments aren’t ordinary at all

Being diagnosed with cervical cancer brought life into rather sharp focus.

It made me realise how easily we put things off. We wait until we have more time, more money, more confidence or until life feels a little less complicated.

But life doesn’t always wait for us.

At 55, I finally left my day job to become the artist I had always wanted to be.

Now I paint the moments that remind us life is beautiful.

Not necessarily the grand occasions or the perfectly arranged ones. Often, it’s something far more ordinary.

The early light over the sea.

Someone sitting beside a river.

A dog waiting at your feet.

A familiar path, a certain field or the back of someone who could so easily be somebody you know.

They are the moments we often rush through without realising how much they mean.

I paint them because I don’t want to miss them.

And because I don’t want you to miss them either.

Paintings you can step into

People often tell me they feel as though they could step into one of my paintings.

That means a great deal to me.

Sometimes a painting reminds you of somewhere you’ve been. Sometimes it brings to mind someone you love. And sometimes it gives you a feeling you can’t quite explain—a sense of home, comfort or recognition.

It might even remind you of the version of yourself you are trying to find your way back to.

That is what I want my work to offer.

Not simply something attractive to fill a space, but something that becomes part of your life. A painting you notice in different ways over the years. Something familiar waiting for you when you come home.

Because the best paintings don’t just hang on the wall.

They keep us company.

Art to live with

Whether I’m creating an original oil painting, a fine art print or something smaller for everyday living, I want it to bring more than colour into your home.

I want it to mean something to you.

Your home should not feel like a place you have arranged for other people to approve of. It should hold the places, people and experiences that have shaped you.

It should feel like yours.

Giving back

As a cancer survivor, this part of my work matters deeply to me.

Ten per cent of every sale is donated to cancer charities, helping to support research and people facing their own diagnosis and recovery.

It is my way of allowing every painting to become part of something larger.

You may find me painting outside

You might come across me with my easel beside the river in Stratford-upon-Avon, on a beach, in a field or anywhere else that has caught my attention.

Occasionally this also involves unexpected interruptions from passing dogs, curious children or hedgehogs in need of rescuing (but that's another story - check the blog page!)

Please do come and say hello.

I genuinely love hearing what a particular place means to someone, or the story a painting has brought back to them. Very often, people see something in my work that I hadn’t consciously put there.

Those conversations become part of the painting too.

You’re very welcome here

Take your time looking around.

You can join my Private Collectors’ Club to see new work first and receive occasional stories from behind the paintings, my travels and life in (and out of) the studio.

Or you can simply browse until something makes you stop.

There’s no rush.

Warm wishes,

Lorraine x
